ABOUT TERRARIUM
Terrariums, to put it simply is a low maintenance, mini garden in a bottle.

Terra” means land in Latin, while the suffix “-arium” refers to a receptacle. Placed together, “terrarium” means “enclosed land/earth.”

History of Terrarium

As early as 500 BC, plants were kept under bell-shaped glass jars for exhibit and display. The concept of modern form terrariums was made popular in 1827 by Dr Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, an amateur horticulturist.  His numerous attempts to building a garden in his home failed due to air pollution from surrounding factories. He then decided to create an enclosed environment by sealing  a moth chrysalis and some mould in a glass jar & a week later, a seedling fern and grass is able to grow. This modern terrarium is what he calls, “Wardian Case.”

Now,  these “Wardian Cases” are known as Terrariums. Terra” means land in Latin, while the suffix “-arium” refers to a receptacle. Placed together, “terrarium” means “enclosed land/earth.” Ward’s legacy continues today with many plant enthusiasts making their own Terrariums!

Terrarium FAQs

  • What is a terrarium?
  • Terrarium are miniature worlds to grow plant ecosystems. They are usually grown in transparent containers such as glass jars or containers and one key feature of terrariums is that they require lower maintenance than your regular potted plant.

  • How many types of terrariums are there?
  • There are generally two types of terrariums – enclosed and open terrariums. At EPIC Workshops, we offer a variety of glass containers to choose from, including our popular Classic closed terrariums and our Angled open terarriums.

  • What types of plants are suitable for terrariums?
  • Slow-growing plants are recommended for terrariums. For our workshops, we provide you with Fittonia plants, also known as nerve plants due to the beautiful pink or white vein patterns on their leaves.

  • How can I decorate my terrarium?
  • When and how should I water my enclosed terrarium?

  • When and how should I water my open terrarium?
  • Open terrariums require water every 2 days; 5 full sprays / 2-3 tablespoons per watering.

  • Do I get to bring my terrarium back after the workshop?
  • Yes! You will be able to bring back the terrarium that you built with your own two hands straight after the workshop. Remember to water it!

  • Where should I place my terrarium?
  • Keep your terrarium away from heat sources, such as beside an oven or computer. Indirect sunlight or indoor lighting is recommended for your terrarium. Do not place your terrarium in direct sunlight as your terrarium functions like a greenhouse – heat is easily trapped within the glass container, which may cook your plants.

  • What is the expected flow of our Terrarium workshop?
  • Our facilitators would start by explaining the basic concepts regarding terrariums, before moving onto the hands-on terrarium-building activity. The session would conclude with our facilitators sharing some maintenance tips, and a photo-taking session with everyone holding their completed terrariums.

  • What materials do I need to make a terrarium?
  • The required materials include a glass jar or container, gravel, dried moss, soil, and most importantly a suitable plant! You would also need some tools to help you with the planting. All these materials are provided for you at our terrarium workshops, along with coloured sand, stones and figurines for decoration.

  • Do I need any prior knowledge to attend the terrarium workshop?
  • No prior knowledge or experience is required for any EPIC Workshops! Our terrarium workshops are suitable for beginners and our skilled facilitators will bring you through the process of building your terrarium step-by-step. Not only would it be an enriching and fulfilling experience for you, but you also get to keep your very own handmade terrarium at the end of the workshop.

  • Why should I choose Us for terrarium workshop?
  • In the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city life, terrariums are wonderful additions to our home and office spaces. They add a touch of greenery to our otherwise monotone surroundings which helps us to relax and unwind. A terrarium is a great starter plant for you if you want to get into the hobby of collecting plants, even if you don’t have green fingers! Terrariums don’t require much maintenance or watering, which makes them suitable for individuals with busy lifestyles.

  • What types of events would the terrarium workshop be suitable for?
  • Any types of events would go well with a terrarium building session, including corporate team-building events, school workshops, birthday / hen’s parties, and even casual gatherings with your friends and family. Don’t hesitate, book your EPIC Workshops’ terrarium workshop today!

  • What age groups are suitable for the terrarium workshop?
  • The terrarium workshop is suitable for all ages, including primary school kids. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children as they would need help handling the fragile glass containers.

  • What's the maximum number of participants for the terrarium workshop?
  • Our studio workshop can hold up to 50 participants for the terrarium workshop. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, our studio’s current maximum limit is 25 participants. For groups larger than 25, there are two options. 1. You can choose to book your own venue with a larger maximum capacity and our facilitators can travel to your location. 2. You can book a virtual terrarium workshop instead for an unlimited number of participants.

  • How does the virtual terrarium workshop work?
  • For virtual terrarium workshops, all the materials you need would be packed and delivered to you in an individual terarrium kit before the day of the virtual workshop. Our facilitators would then be conducting the workshop over Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other online platform of your choice, and you and all of the other participants can enjoy building your own terrariums from the comfort of your own homes.

  • Where is the workshop held?
  • We provide a venue at our space near Marymount MRT station which accomodates up to 50 pax. Alternatively, if you have another place in mind, please feel free to let us know and we can make arrangements too.

  • How can I make a reservation?
  • Please contact us at 6355 0329 or contact@epicworkshops.com.sg for reservations and enquiries.
